A single, fast, well-rehearsed way to stop an autonomous AI agent *right now* — halting its runs and revoking its credentials — without shipping a code change. It is the most basic safety control an unattended agent needs and the one most often missing: many teams discover during an incident that their only way to stop a misbehaving agent is to deploy a fix, which can take an hour the agent doesn't have. A real kill switch is immediate (seconds, not a deploy cycle), complete (stops in-flight runs *and* prevents new ones, ideally by revoking the agent's identity and tokens so it can't act even if a process lingers), and rehearsed (someone has actually tested it, so it works under pressure). It complements the automatic circuit breaker: the breaker handles failures too fast for humans, the kill switch handles the judgment call — 'stop this agent for a reason no metric caught.' Pairs with a named accountable owner who has the authority and the access to pull it.
A pricing agent starts setting absurd discounts after an upstream data feed corrupts. The on-call owner hits the kill switch: within seconds the agent's API tokens are revoked and its run queue is drained, so it can't set another price — no deploy required. Contrast the team whose 'kill switch' was a code change: their agent kept acting for the 40 minutes it took to build, review, and ship the fix.
